9th Anniversary Celebrations!

State Bird Provisions. For foodies, this is the coveted go-to restaurant right now in all of America. It was voted Best New Restaurant in America by the James Beard Foundation (sort of like the Oscars for food) and by Bon Appetit magazine.

I've been wanting to go here ever since arriving in SF, but tables are always booked months in advance. They recently expanded and announced that they would keep a good amount of tables open each night for walk-ins so off we went in the rain on our 9th anniversary to try our luck. I arrived at 5:10 (restaurant opens at 5:30) and there were already 28 people in line so I immediately texted Mar to think about a back-up plan. Mar arrived a few minutes later and by then, there were over 40+ people in line. Once the restaurant opened, we eagerly waited and watched as the line got shorter and shorter... and once we got to the front of the line, the hostess said, "That's it! You guys got the last table!" I couldn't have been more excited to finally see the inside of the restaurant, and feel the energy of the wait staff pushing carts and carrying huge trays of small tapas table to table.

Contemporary American food, served dim sum style.... brilliant concept and everything was so delicious and creative. The fried pork belly soaked in Vietnamese vinaigrette with grapes, chili and cilantro was my absolute favorite as well as the spicy dungeness crab kimchi yuba with smoked egg.

It was such a fun evening and brought us back to those days when we'd go for drinks and dinner all the time pre-kids. At least for a few hours, we got to relive it again. Thanks Oma for watching the kids and making this happen!
